No road is built to be right, all that we have is eventuality.
From the dawn of time fear has kept humans safe. Instinct lets you know of incoming danger, of monsters lurking in forested corners, of food gone bad, it’s a tingling in the chin and back of the neck, and through any means necessary instinct without hesitation or judgement will do what it must to try to keep you safe. It’s the human superpower.
This is why on Saturday morning at exactly 9:30 am after the sound of a post-van departing the street Devin still in his pyjamas threw himself from his bedroom window. It was not the smell of smoke from the fire downstairs that compelled him, it was the sound of it. He carefully tried to shuffle down the tiled roof towards the drain pipe to quietly climb his way down. Yet the day was early. A miscalculation saw his foot, and prosthetic leg slipping on the mornings damp moss covered roof. Perhaps had he chosen the leg more flexible instead of urging his parents for the metal one, more durable and stronger than any human could possibly have, so that he could use it to kick the annoying bully Little Limmy Jimm in the balls so hard that he could never forget, he would now not be slipping.
The time had come to pay for his crimes. He falls, hands desperately grasping clumps of moss and bird poop as he goes backwards. His landing is broken by the family car, his arms and legs sprawled like a starfish his eyes closed tightly as he listens to the mistake of his clamber echo repeating throughout the street.The door flings open. There stands his furious fathers fuming corporeal forms, one of which has a failing report card in hand. A finger points with wide fiery eyes like a man commanding a dog to heel when in truth he’s ready to put it down, through clenched jaws and a sharp jawline the whisper hisses out of him like a deflating tyre. “Come here.”
